Kiev cake is perhaps one of the main gastronomic attractions of the capital of Ukraine. Only Kiev cutlets can compare with it in taste and popularity.
History of origin
In the Soviet Union, Russians often brought Kiev cake from their trips and treated them to friends and acquaintances. Now this Ukrainian landmark is easy to buy in a store, and if you wish, you can make it yourself using numerous recipes.
For the first time, the Kiev cake was made in 1956. It owes its origin to a seventeen-year-old girl named Nadezhda Chernogor. After graduating from school, she unsuccessfully tried to enter medical school and after that began taking lessons in pastry art.
The first task that Nadezhda faced was decorating the cakes.
Despite the apparent simplicity, decorating was a responsible matter and did not immediately succumb to the student.
Six months later, the girl began to do an excellent job not only with this, but also with other tasks. Nadezhda felt the strength to become an independent professional pastry chef.
In the same year, Nadezhda Chernogor developed a recipe for her own masterpiece - Kiev cake. The Karl Marx factory, where the student studied, became interested in the recipe and baked three cakes for a sample. And then five more, then lots of new delicacies were produced in ever larger quantities.
Wanting to make the cake even tastier, Nadezhda added her signature cream to it.
Since then, the recipe for the Kiev cake has remained unchanged and was almost the main secret of the factory.
Recognition and other masterpieces
In 1957, Kiev cake for the first time took third place in a prestigious competition and won the massive love of sweet tooths. And only in 1976 the dessert and its creator took the deserved first place in the republican competition.
At the moment, the recipe for making a cake has become simpler and much cheaper. For example, now not five varieties of walnut are used for manufacturing, but only one. Although, on the other hand, this fact did not in any way affect the taste of the confectionery masterpiece. After all, the main thing here is not the number of varieties of nuts, but the technology of preparation. A real Kiev cake will be only if its cakes are cooked in a special production oven and turn out to be airy and nutty.
Nadezhda Chernogor worked at the factory. Karl Marx all her life and as an honorary duty she personally tasted each new batch of Kiev cakes. The creator also took part in another interesting culinary adventure. She participated in the preparation of a five-tiered cake dedicated to Leonid Brezhnev's birthday. This masterpiece weighed over 5 kg and consisted of 70 different parts.
