The avocado will taste good and will benefit your health if the fruit is ripe and not spoiled. How not to make a mistake with the choice? What criteria should you pay attention to in order not to be disappointed in the purchase afterwards?
The main points to look out for when choosing an avocado are:
- fetal weight;
- appearance;
- color in the area of the cut of the stalk;
- softness / hardness of the fruit;
- the position of the seed inside the fruit.
A ripe and ready-to-eat avocado, even if the fruit is small, always feels quite heavy in the hand. Too light fruits can be either overripe or not fully ripe.
Having chosen a fruit, you need to carefully examine the avocado from all sides. There should be no dents, dark or black spots, cuts, etc. on the surface of the fruit. It will be useful to take a closer look at the color of the peel, which depends on the type of fruit. Ripe Pinkerton avocados should have an even emerald hue. The fruits of the Florida variety should also be distinguished by a rich green tone. If the peel of the avocado of these species has a mint hue or light green color, then such fruits are considered unripe. The presence of completely dark areas indicates that the avocado is overripe. There is also a third popular avocado variety - California. It is distinguished by brown or brownish-green shades of the peel, the surface of the fruit is always bumpy. If such a fruit has a lot of light spots, it is not worth buying. Otherwise, you will have to wait for the avocado to ripen at home.
The next step in choosing a good avocado is to carefully examine where the fruit is cut from the stalk. If this area has a rich green hue, then such a fruit is ready to eat. It will be ripe and delicious. A yellow-green color indicates that the fruit is in the process of ripening. But an avocado, in which the cut site has become dry and dark brown or even blackened, should never be taken. Chances are high that the fruit not only overripe, but also began to rot from the inside.
It is believed that a hard and dense to the touch avocado will have a special taste and soft texture. However, it is not. If the fruit is very hard, it is considered unripe. Of course, you can eat it, but the taste will be unpleasant. Ripe avocado should be a little soft, but keep its shape well, there should be no dents on the surface. To check the ripeness of the avocado, you need to lightly press your fingers on the fruit. If the fingerprint quickly disappears, the peel is gently smoothed, then such a fruit is ripe.
Avocado is a fruit, inside of which there is, as a rule, a rather massive stone. In a ripe fruit, it separates from the pulp quite easily. Before purchasing the selected avocado, you should shake it slightly and listen to if there is any sound from the inside. If the bone taps on the walls of the fruit, you can safely buy such an avocado.
