Both adults and children are looking forward to the second half of summer, when it will be possible to enjoy the huge striped berries of a watermelon in plenty. But the choice of a watermelon is sometimes difficult.
Appearance
- If a watermelon has a dry tail, then it ripened on the melon, and not during transportation and storage. Such a berry will be sweeter.
- The yellow barrel on which the watermelon lay also shows the degree of its ripeness: the more yellow it is, the longer the watermelon ripens, which means that it tastes better.
- Ripe watermelon has a shiny crust, the stripes on it are contrasting or dark green.
Other signs
- If you rub the crust and it gives off a herbaceous smell - this fruit is unripe, it is better to refuse to buy.
- An unripe berry has a soft peel that is easy to scratch, a ripe peel is more durable, it is difficult to push it with a fingernail.
- A ripe watermelon crunches when you squeeze it with your palms - this is a "classic" for recognizing the ripeness of a watermelon.
- When you pat a ripe fruit, you will hear a deep, resonant sound. An unripe watermelon will respond with a dull sound.
- Slightly flattened watermelons with a wide circle at the tail are usually sweet. They are also called "girls". But elongated with a less noticeable circle around the tail, or "boys" - are inferior to them in taste.
- Berries weighing 3-5 kg are considered the best. Do not take too small a fruit. It is also better to refuse the giant watermelon. You will most likely be disappointed.
