Dozens of types of roasted sunflower seeds can be seen on store shelves. But the seeds in packs are often rancid, under- or overcooked, or simply tasteless. In order not to be disappointed over and over again, you can buy raw seeds and fry them at home.
Instructions
Step 1
When buying, choose medium-sized seeds: small ones are inconvenient to clean, and peeling too large ones (due to thick husks) hurt fingers or tooth enamel deteriorates. Raw seeds can be fried in several ways: in a skillet, in the microwave, or in the oven.
Step 2
To fry the seeds on the stove, place a frying pan on the hotplate. It is advisable to take a frying pan with a large bottom diameter and low sides. You can pour a little (no more than a tablespoon) of unrefined sunflower oil into a heated frying pan. This will give the seeds an extra flavor. However, you can do without it. Place the seeds in a hot skillet.
Step 3
If you want to get moderately roasted seeds (with light cream colored kernels), make a small heat and stir the contents of the pan constantly. Those who like lightly roasted sunflower seeds, with ruddy casks, can try the quicker method. Set the burner to maximum power and fry the seeds for 1-1.5 minutes, stirring all the time. Turn off the hotplate and let the seeds cool in the skillet. In 10-15 minutes, you will have delicious and aromatic sunflower seeds.
Step 4
It is even easier to fry sunflower seeds in the microwave. Place a small amount of sunflower seeds on a plate and spread them evenly. Set the microwave to medium power and set the timer for 2 minutes. After this time, open the door and stir the heated seeds. Let them cool right on the plate. If the seeds are not roasted or you like a different degree of roasting, repeat the procedure again, also setting the timer for 2 minutes. The cooking time can be changed, depending on the number of seeds and the power of your microwave oven.
Step 5
With this method, stirring the seeds after the expiration of the first frying period is mandatory. In fact, in 2 minutes they only have time to dry slightly, and then "reach" on a plate heated from microwaves. If the seeds are not mixed, the lower part, which is in contact with the dishes, will burn, and the upper part will remain moist.
Step 6
If you bought dirty seeds, put them in a colander and rinse under the tap. Place the seeds on a paper towel and pat dry. Turn on the oven, wait for it to heat up. Place the seeds in an even layer on a baking sheet and place in the oven. The fire should be kept to a minimum. After 5 minutes, stir the seeds and put them back in the oven. After a few minutes, the seeds will start to snap. This means that they give off moisture. Don't miss the moment when the seeds are ready. Take out the baking sheet every 3-5 minutes and taste the seeds. Once you're satisfied with the taste, take out the baking sheet and immediately pour the fried sunflower seeds into another bowl. Otherwise, they will burn on a hot baking sheet before they cool down.
