Decanter is a glass decanter designed for decanting and serving wine. Mature wines need decantation to separate the pigmentation sediment that has fallen to the bottom of the bottle during storage.
Functions and types of decanters:
- The decanter is necessary primarily to separate the formed sediment in the wine gently, without shaking.
- It is also used to increase the oxygen content of wine, thereby imparting new flavors to the wine.
- Another function of the decanter is aesthetics, to present wine with a twist to the table, to emphasize the nobility of the drink.
There are different types of decanters. The sediment mainly appears in red wines with long-term aging, then one type of decanter is made for them. For less aged wines, a different type is used.
Decanter for aged wines
Such a decanter has a round or spherical shape in the lower part, and in the upper part there is a narrow long neck. Such a decanter can be in the form of a classic decanter with a wide base, which retains sediment when pouring wine into glasses.
Decanter for white wines
Whites and wines with a short aging period have no sediment, so the decanter for them is used only for oxygenation to improve the quality of the wine. Decanters for white wines can be of any shape, but it is important that the base is wide and the neck is funnel-shaped. The wine should be poured into the decanter no higher than the widest part so that the wine is saturated with oxygen as much as possible.
Decanter for whiskey and cognac
In addition to wine, cognac and whiskey have a noble taste. To enjoy these drinks, they are also decanted before serving. The decanter for these drinks has a round or square shape with a short neck, made of transparent crystal.
