Compost is an organic fertilizer obtained by decomposing household waste of plant or animal origin. For its preparation, grass, leaves, paper, newspapers, sawdust and so on are used. Fertilizer obtained as a result of composting significantly improves soil fertility, contributes to its loosening and increases productivity.

Composting

You can use an old leaky barrel or make a wooden box to compost your garden plot. You can also purchase a special plastic container for this in the store.

A shady place is chosen under the compost so that the compost ingredients do not dry out in the sun. Then organic waste is laid in layers in a box or barrel. Between them, it is imperative to lay either humus or peat. This technique promotes the rapid decomposition of waste and improves the beneficial properties of the compost. In this case, it is imperative to alternate wet components with dry ones. The thickness of the layer consisting of green grasses and plants should not exceed 25 cm, and household waste - 15 cm. In this case, manure, humus or peat should be placed in a layer of no more than 5 cm. Also, every 50 cm, many experts advise to lay a layer of fertile soil.

After laying all the compost, it must be spilled with hot water with the addition of chicken manure or mullein infusion. This will greatly improve the decay of plant waste. The top of the compost heap is covered with a layer of straw or dry hay.

At the same time, the dimensions of the compost heap should be about 1.5 m wide and at least 1 m high. Boxes or barrels in which compost is prepared must be blown by the wind from all sides and have many openings for oxygen access. Properly prepared compost will be ready in about six to seven months.

Can apples be thrown into compost?

Very often, a large number of carrion birds appear on the personal plot. These are apples that a person does not have time to process and eat. Therefore, the question arises: can these apples be used for composting?

Of course, apples can be used for this. You just need to do it right. Since apples have a fairly long full rotting process, they are laid in a compost pit for a long time. Such compost cannot be used for a year and a half.

Also, unripe and green fruits should not be put in compost. Only decayed and rotten apples should be used. Only then will they bring the maximum benefit to the compost and accelerate the process of decay of other organic waste and plant residues.

Other fruits and vegetables can be used for composting: pears, carrots, onions, spring garlic, potatoes, pumpkin, zucchini, cucumbers, and so on.
