It's hard to imagine a kitchen that doesn't have even a small supply of onions. Several bulbs bought at the nearest supermarket will keep well in the refrigerator, however, special conditions are needed to preserve the harvest from your own garden.

It is necessary

  • - onion;
  • - twine.

Instructions

Step 1

The preparation of onions for storage should be started even during harvest, in late August or early September. This is best done in clear dry weather, without waiting for frost. Pull the bulbs out of the ground, spread them out in a thin layer and leave to dry on the beds.

Step 2

Move the slightly dried crop to a well-ventilated dry place, preferably dark. Spread the onion in a thin layer and leave until the roots and leaves are completely dry.

Step 3

Onions are best kept in braids. To make such a braid, cut off the dried roots of the plant, being careful not to damage the bottom. Knead dried leaves slightly to make them more flexible. Peel off some of the husk that comes off easily from the onion.

Step 4

Take a piece of strong twine a little longer than the future braid. On one side, make a loop on the twine for which the braid can be hung. Tie an onion support at the other end. To do this, you can tie a strong wooden stick seven centimeters long to the rope.

Step 5

Tie the bulbs in pairs by dry tails so that the distance between them in a pair is at least ten centimeters. It is advisable to match heads of the same size in pairs.

Step 6

Hang the twine from the loop and slide the first pair of onions onto the bottom end of the twine, looping them criss-cross around the rope. While holding the first pair, wrap the second pair around the twine in the same way. The bulbs from the second pair should not be exactly above the first pair, but slightly to the side. As a result, the rope will be closed on all sides with a bow.

Step 7

The braid can be hung over a central heating radiator or in any other dry and warm place. Onions are stored at temperatures of eighteen degrees and above. Of course, this does not apply to small onion sets that you are going to plant in the garden. It should be stored in a basket in a dry place at a temperature not exceeding five degrees.

Step 8

If you did not manage to tie the bulbs, they can be folded into a nylon stocking and hung in this form over the battery. You can place the onions packed in this way in any other place with warm and dry air.
