How mold forms in a jam jar

Mold in a jar of jam can appear due to insufficient amount of sugar, which in this case acts as a preservative, or a short boiling of the jam. The reason is also often the use of poorly washed and moldy products, unsterilized jars or lids, and storage of unsealed containers with jam in a damp room.

Why is mold dangerous?

For some products, mold is specially bred to give it its characteristic flavor and aroma. An example of this would be certain types of cheese that smell very specific. This noble mold is believed to contain beneficial bacteria that aid intestinal function.

Nevertheless, even such products are recommended to be eaten in strictly limited quantities.

Self-forming mold, which is often found on food surfaces or building walls, consists of thousands of types of fungi that can actively grow and produce dangerous toxins. The latter substances, when accumulated in the body, destroy it slowly but surely.

The fact is that mold contains a poison called mitotoxin, which not only provokes poisoning, gastrointestinal disorders and reduces immunity, but can also lead to mutations at the cellular level. At the same time, a person for many years may not notice the negative changes taking place in his body.

Those who are allergic to pelicillin should be especially wary of mold. Even the smallest dispute in this case can often have dire consequences.

How to deal with mold in a jam jar

Scientists warn that a product affected by mold should not be eaten at all. The fact is that the structure of molds consists of two types of filaments. The first, spores, always stretch up, and the second penetrate into the product, forming a mycelium invisible to the eye. Thus, even a small amount of mold on the product can already signal its complete infection.

At the same time, many types of mold fungi absolutely calmly tolerate both very low and high temperatures. So simply removing the moldy section of the jam with a spoon and boiling the rest will have absolutely no effect - you will still have the same toxic product.

This is why it is very important to dispose of this product as soon as possible if mold is found in a jar of jam. At the same time, it is not recommended to bring it close to your face and even more so to smell it - light mold spores can easily enter your body through the nasopharynx. In addition, it is advisable to throw away not only the jam itself, but also the jar in which it was stored.
