Cognac is a unique drink with exquisite aroma and taste. To fully enjoy the cognac, you need the right glasses. It's pretty easy to find them.
Form and content
Of course, it cannot be argued that the use of really good cognac from the wrong dishes will completely change its smell and taste, but it will be much more difficult to fully appreciate them.
The culture of drinking this divine drink is already several hundred years old. It should be noted that little has changed during this time. There are two types of glasses, one is traditional, tested by many generations of lovers of this drink, the other is modern, created relatively recently.
Tradition versus modern solutions
The traditional cognac glass is called a snifter. Its name comes from the English word snift, which means "to sniff". These are the glasses that can be seen in movies and restaurants. The snifter has a characteristic, almost spherical shape and a low stem, while the walls of the glass are noticeably narrowed towards the top.
The snifter lies comfortably in the palm of your hand, transferring all its warmth to the cognac. This contributes to the release of the aroma of the drink. Thanks to the tapering walls, the aroma is retained inside the glass, in order to fully appreciate it, it is enough to bring the snifter to the nose. It should be noted that many aged, really old cognacs sometimes have a very strong smell, which, at a high concentration inside the snifter, can hit the nose hard enough, overshadowing the first acquaintance with the drink. Glasses of this type have been successfully used for cognac since the sixteenth century.
A more modern glass is a tulip. This is an elongated glass with a long stem, its shape resembles a half-opened flower. Such a glass is not heated in the hands, but is held by the graceful leg, gently rotating. Cognac slowly spreads along the walls, saturated with oxygen and begins to actively "give" its aroma, which leaves the glass through a narrow neck.
To choose the right glasses for cognac, think about which approach to the consumption of this drink you like best. Snifters make drinking cognac more intimate. Stroking pot-bellied glasses, bringing them to your face is a very sensual, thoughtful process. Tulips make drinking this drink more elegant, aristocratic.
Both types of glasses are good in their brevity, so you should not buy tulips or snifters that are overly decorated, overloaded with details. It is advisable to purchase them in sets. If possible, it makes sense to purchase both types of glasses and compare the sensations when using them.
