The choice of certain types of glasses is very important. It is the glass that allows you to better reveal the aroma of the drink, warm it up or keep it chilled. Historically, the following recommendations have developed:

Wine glasses

The variety of wine glasses is quite large: now there are specific glasses for almost any kind of wine. Nevertheless, tall transparent glasses on a long (at least 5 cm) thin stem, made of crystal or high-quality glass, no more than 1 mm thick, are considered to be the classic form. The base must be sufficiently stable. The bowl of the glass has a wide bottom, and tapers towards the top, resembling an opening tulip. This helps to concentrate the aroma and better reveal the taste of the drink.

The glass is held by the stem so that the wine does not heat up from the warmth of the hands. Fill it up - not less than one third and not more than half.

There are no clear limits on the volume of wine glasses, but, as a rule, it is 250-300 ml for red wine and 180-260 ml for white. A glass for white wine is smaller, since it is customary to serve it chilled to 12 ° С and pour a little so that it does not have time to heat up, while red wine should have room temperature: 16-18 ° С.

Wine glasses for champagne, sparkling wines

Sparkling wines are served in narrow tall glasses, 160-180 ml, three-quarters full. In French, such glasses are called Flute - flute. Their walls are even or slightly expanding upward.

From time to time, champagne is served in glasses, bowls ("bowls") with a volume of 140-160 ml, but sparkling wines are instantly "weathered" in them.

Cognac glasses

A classic cognac glass ("sniffer", from the English "sniff") - large, spherical, tapering towards the top and with a short stem. It is convenient to hold it in the palm of your hand, warming the cognac with its warmth to let its aroma unfold. The volume of the glass is 240-875 ml. Brandy and Calvados are drunk from the same dish.

The drink is poured to the widest part (by one third), drink, holding the glass in the palm of your hand, placing the leg between the middle and ring fingers.

Quite often, cognac is now drunk from a tulip glass (160-240 ml) on an extended leg, filling it only by a quarter.

Containers for vodka and "shots" ("shooters")

Despite the established stereotype about a faceted glass, there are also special glasses for vodka. Their volume is 40-50 ml, and they are filled under the rim. According to the rules of etiquette, vodka is drunk from such glasses in small sips.

Another option is a "stack". This is a miniature glass without a stem, designed specifically to drink poured in one sip ("Shot" / Shot Glass). Its volume is 40-60 ml. Typically used for vodka, whiskey, gin and cocktail shots.

Glasses for vermouth and liqueurs

The triangular glass, habitually associated with Martini, is intended for cocktails, not for pure vermouth. Undiluted liqueurs and vermouth are poured into small (40-60 ml) Cordial Glass liqueur glasses.

If you need to add ice, you can use a larger glass (high - "highball", low - "rocks"). In addition, there is Porto Glass - a wide, slightly tapered glass with a long stem, in which vermouth and fortified wines can also be served.

Cocktail Dishes

It is almost impossible to come to a unified system here, since the form of serving a cocktail, as a rule, is determined by the imagination of its creator. The main types of glasses are: a triangular glass on a thin stem Cocktail Glass (120-160 ml) - for chilled cocktails without ice; a glass "Margarita" of a specific shape - an elongated narrow bottom and wide edges (200-250 ml) - for a cocktail of the same name and ice drinks; various glasses - for whiskey with cola, frappe, etc.
