Traditional groats of North Africa and the Middle East appeared on our tables quite recently and are not yet widely known. The exotic name is familiar to many, except from TV series, adventure films and exotic recipes found in culinary magazines.
It may seem to many that this is something similar to millet or rice. But in reality, couscous is just well-rolled semolina balls sprinkled with flour.
Couscous, which has been steamed, is especially useful. This method allows you to maximize the preservation of useful substances in it. True, there is another common cooking method - cooking. The porridge will definitely turn out crumbly if you add a little butter to it. But you can do without heat treatment on the stove - just pour the broth over the couscous, cover with a lid and “forget” for 10-15 minutes. The added lemon juice will add originality to this wonderful dish, and the cereals will remain healthy, rich in vitamins.
Traditional Middle Eastern couscous is made from durum wheat and is considered the healthiest. The Arabs prefer to sell and buy this handmade cereal; in our stores, of course, a factory version is implemented, designed for a wide consumer. When choosing a product, carefully inspect the packaging - there are only two ingredients in a real cereal: water and cereal.
There are several reasons why couscous is best avoided. For example, diabetes mellitus and thyroid ailments. Also, you should not feast on dishes from this cereal if you are overweight, since it is high in calories.
Under the right conditions, couscous can last long enough. Pack the cereals hermetically and put them in a cool place where odors from other foods cannot reach. In this case, the beneficial properties of cereals will be preserved for a period of 6 to 10 months.
Ideally, couscous should be consumed a couple of times a week in the morning. For breakfast, porridge with berries or fruits added to it is suitable. If we talk about lunch, then couscous will be an excellent side dish for meat or poultry. No wonder this cereal is so loved in some regions of the world.
Couscous is just a treasure trove of useful elements. People who use it regularly have better hair growth and stronger nails. Also, cereal has a beneficial effect on the female hormonal system.
