Algae can be a problem when it comes to polluting ponds and lakes, but they can be used in many different ways outside of water bodies. Algae grows in water with low currents or stagnant water. Thousands of different types of algae are found all over the world.
Food
Seaweed is a type of algae that humans use for food. Seagrass is added to sushi and salads. Algae are also found in other dishes as a thickener or instead of gelatin due to the gelatin-like substance they contain. This thickener is used in ice cream, sauces and baked goods. Carrageenan and agar are found in algae and are used as additives.
Medicine
Agar found in red algae is used as a nutrient medium in biological research. Some people use red algae to strengthen their immune system, treat respiratory and skin conditions. Algae contains iodine, which is necessary for the normal functioning of the thyroid gland, therefore algae are also used in the treatment of thyroid diseases. In Chinese medicine, algae is used to treat cancer and other diseases, but the effectiveness of such treatment has not been scientifically proven.
Energy
Fast-growing algae are used to make biofuels. Although not very common, scientists and companies are experimenting with algae as fuel to heat homes and power cars. Some types of algae contain a lot of oil that can be processed into diesel and aviation fuels.
