Instructions

Step 1

If you want to leave white cabbage fresh, you need to remove it from the beds as late as possible, but before the moment when severe frosts come. Heads of cabbage are selected dense and strong, looser vegetables will not withstand long-term storage. After that, you need to remove excess leaves from the cabbage, inspect it, if necessary, clean it of rotten and damaged areas. It is recommended to dry the vegetables for several hours before storing them.

Step 2

The optimal storage temperature for cabbage is from +1 to +5 degrees, while it does not lose its beneficial properties and is less subject to rotting. Depending on the area of your underground or cellar, you can choose the option of storing cabbage. One of the most effective is the method when the heads of cabbage with the stump and roots left are hung upside down, without removing the upper green leaves. You can also pour some dry sand into the basement and plant the heads of cabbage in such an impromptu "ridge", if possible at some distance from each other. Both methods provide a sufficiently long storage of vegetables with good ventilation and the correct temperature regime.

Step 3

If your storage space is limited, another method may be a great alternative. To begin with, cut the stump of the prepared heads of cabbage almost flush with the leaves. Then wrap each vegetable tightly in several layers of regular plastic wrap. Place the "packaged" heads of cabbage on shelves or in wooden crates. This method is quite effective provided that the cabbage is inspected regularly (at least once a month) and leaves that have begun to deteriorate are removed. The room in which vegetables are stored must be periodically ventilated in dry weather.
