During the harvesting period and harvesting it for the winter, each owner is concerned about how to keep vegetables intact for the longest period, including how to store onions in winter. If you follow a few simple tips, you can enjoy the beneficial qualities of this irreplaceable product until late spring.
Instructions
Step 1
Prepare the onions for storage by drying them outdoors. You can also dry the onions in an electric dryer or oven at minimum temperatures for several hours. In this case, it is important not to overdry the vegetable, otherwise the upper scales that protect the bulb itself may crack. When the onions are dry, cut off the dry feathers with scissors. The length of the feathers left should be within 3 cm.
Step 2
Then transfer the onions to wooden crates. A ventilated container for storage is selected so that all bulbs are stored at the same temperature. Instead of boxes, cloth bags are sometimes used. The thinner the layer of the stored onion, the better it will lie and the easier it will be to control its condition. In the case when there is a lot of onions, put them in several boxes so that the height of the vegetables in each does not exceed 30 cm. Sprinkle the onion with dry husks on top, this will prevent it from drying out.
Step 3
It is important to choose the right place to store the onion. It should be dry and dark enough. If there is a basement, then in the fall, put boxes with onions in it. The ideal storage temperature is slightly above 0 degrees. In the apartment, onions can be stored in the kitchen. In this case, the temperature should be kept within 18-20 degrees. This storage location has only one drawback: since the air in apartments in winter suffers from a lack of moisture, the vegetable can dry out. If the room is too humid, the onion will start to rot or it will sprout roots. Look carefully at the onions periodically, looking for sprouted and injured ones. If you leave them among the whole mass, then you can provoke the process of decay.
