Step 1
Two coconuts will make 4 to 6 cups of coconut milk. The amount depends on how thick you make the final product. It is very important to take clean water, you do not want to get healthy milk from chlorinated tap water, do you?
Step 2
Your first task is to crack open the coconut. There are at least 10 different ways, but almost every one of them starts with the fact that coconut juice is drained from the coconut - a clear liquid that many people mistakenly consider coconut milk.
Step 3
After dividing the coconut into two halves, you must remove the white flesh from the sides. Some sources advise putting the coconut halves in the freezer for half an hour, then the procedure for scraping the coconut, they say, will be easier. Others for the same purpose, on the contrary, recommend placing the coconut halves for twenty minutes in an oven preheated to 180 degrees Celsius. Scrape the coconut with a wide knife, spoon, or a special device called a coconut shredder. If you decide to remove the pulp with a knife, make sure that it is not very sharp and cannot injure you. A dull knife is sufficient for your task, and the blade often breaks off and, if very sharp, can seriously injure you.
Step 4
After scrubbing the halves, pick up a blender. Pour clean water into a blender bowl and add one piece of coconut pulp. The thicker you want the milk, the less water you need to pour. Turn on the blender and gradually mash all the pulp.
Step 5
Turn off the blender, take cheesecloth and put the coconut puree in it. Squeeze cheesecloth over a glass or plastic container. Thick coconut milk will flow from it.
