What is dumplings

Before dealing with the fact that dumplings are the national dish of which country, it will not be superfluous to get an idea of the content of this dish and the rules for its use. These are small pies made of unleavened dough stuffed with meat, fish or vegetables that are boiled, fried or steamed. In addition to the internal content in different countries, dumplings differ in size and shape. They can be served either with broth, when dumplings become an excellent alternative to any soup, or in pure form without liquid. In this case, butter, sour cream, various sauces are added to the dumplings, which allows you to get a new taste of the dish with the initially identical composition.

The name of this dish is different in each country. For example, in Japan it is gedza, in Italy - tortellini, in China - jiaozi and wontons. These are small items. The larger ones are known as manti and khinkali.

The history of the appearance of dumplings

There is no reliable data confirming the appearance of the first dumplings in a particular country, but there are more than enough legends and versions on this topic. Classic Russian dumplings, so popular in Siberia, according to one version, were borrowed by people from the Finno-Ugric northern tribes and only much later became widespread in the rest of the country. This indirectly confirms the very name of the dish, which was obtained during the transformation of two words from the languages of these nationalities: "pel" - ear and "nanny" - dough. According to the second version, dumplings appeared during the Mongol-Tatar invasion and have Chinese roots.

There is also a point of view that the first dumplings could appear in Turkey, and from there spread to the countries of Asia and the Caucasus.

What are the similarities and differences in recipes from different countries

Dumplings and ravioli are most similar, since the difference is only in a small amount of olive oil added to the latter's dough. Georgian khinkali differ from dumplings in the abundance of juice obtained by cooking inside. Asian manti also have a similar taste. But if the filling for dumplings is most often taken from beef or pork, then for manti in Asia, lamb is taken. Chinese dumplings wontons have a filling specific for a European in the form of shrimp, Chinese cabbage, and other vegetables. Each of these dishes is good in its own way. So there can be no universal answer to the question of whose national dish dumplings are simply impossible, since residents of the countries in which they are used can safely assume that the authorship of the recipe belongs to them, as well as the fact that it can be fully considered national.
