Absinthe, also known as the Green Fairy, once had a reputation as a hallucinogenic drink and was quite popular with bohemians, writers, entertainers, and artists. Absinthe was drunk by Edgar Poe, Vincent Van Gogh, Oscar Wilde and many others. It has been banned in many countries. Not so long ago, scientists proved that the amount of wormwood contained in this drink is not capable of causing hallucinations. Absinthe was rehabilitated and allowed for sale.
It is necessary
- Absinthe glass
- Absinthe spoon
- Sugar
- A jug of clean cold water and ice
- Flame source
- Cognac glass
Instructions
Step 1
High quality absinthe is made from natural herbs. The presence of wormwood, anise, fennel is mandatory, but others can be added to them - lemon balm, mint, calamus. Good absinthe does not contain any artificial colors or flavors. The drink owes its pale green color to chlorophyll contained in plants. Bright green absinthe can be artificially colored. Vintage absinthe and absinthe from a special variety of wormwood can be amber in color.
Step 2
There are several common methods of drinking absinthe. French Ritual: Pour approximately one ounce (30 milliliters) of absinthe into a special glass. The correct glassware for absinthe has a "bulbous" bottom that turns into a narrow neck, expanding upward. The lower round part is designed for exactly the amount of drink that is considered a classic dose.
Step 3
Place a special absinthe spoon (perforated) on a glass and place one sugar cube in it. Sugar is traditionally used to balance the bitter taste of wormwood.
Step 4
Prepare a small jug of clean, cold water. Start slowly, drop by drop, so that it dissolves the sugar, and the sweet water gradually flows into the drink. If the water in the jug heats up too quickly, add ice to it. When water is added, absinthe gradually becomes cloudy, loses its bright green color, drops of water smoothly settle to the bottom of the glass, leaving a smoky trail behind them. It is for this effect that absinthe got its nickname - the Green Fairy.
Step 5
After all the sugar has been dissolved in water, stir well with the same spoon through which the sweet water dripped. Now you can slowly, savoring, drink absinthe.
Step 6
Glass to Glass Method. Put an ordinary small glass of absinthe in a large and wide glass.
Step 7
Start adding cold water drop by drop to the glass. The contents of the small vessel will gradually overflow into the large one. Stop when there is only water in the glass and diluted absinthe in the glass. Take out the glass carefully. Absinthe is ready to drink.
Step 8
This method can be called a variation of the popular method of slowly diluting absinthe with cold water. Especially for him, absinthe fountains were invented - complex devices that allow cold water, drop by drop, to drain into absinthe.
Step 9
Czech way: Pour some absinthe into a cognac glass. Put a lump of sugar in an absinthe spoon and soak it in the drink by dropping it directly into the glass or dripping absinthe onto it.
Step 10
Hold a spoonful of sugar soaked in alcohol over a fire. When the sugar is on fire, place a spoon over the absinthe so that the melted sugar drips into the drink. You don't have to wait until the sugar is completely melted, but dip another flaming spoon into the absinthe. Be prepared for the drink to catch fire - pour a little cold water over it or blow out the flame.
