Popcorn: harm or benefit

Some people, especially kids and teens, like popcorn. But it is not uncommon to hear claims that popcorn is unhealthy. So is it okay to eat popcorn or is it better to abstain from this food?

What are the benefits of popcorn

Fans of this food claim that popcorn is only good for the body. After all, corn grains are very rich in proteins, carbohydrates, fiber, B vitamins, trace elements (including such important as potassium). In addition, corn is a low-calorie product. For many peoples, for example, residents of a number of Latin American countries, Romania, Moldova, corn is still an important component of their diet. Popcorn admirers also cite the example of the famous singer Madonna, who retained an excellent figure in her middle age due to the fact that she regularly ate popcorn.

Why popcorn can be harmful

At first glance, popcorn may not cause any harm to the body. However, everything is not so simple. The fact is that the benefits are "pure" popcorn, without the addition of fats, flavors, salt and sugar. The same product that can be purchased at vending machines for the production and sale of popcorn contains all of these additives, and in significant quantities. So it turns out that instead of a healthy dietary product, a person eats food, from which there can be very real harm, especially if such popcorn is consumed regularly and in significant quantities.

If the popcorn is sweet, it can lead to excess weight and an increased strain on the digestive organs, especially the pancreas. If popcorn is salty, it disrupts the water balance in the body, provokes thirst and edema. In addition, in the production of many types of popcorn with a wide variety of flavors, synthetic flavors and cheap oils are used to reduce production costs. Such a mixture, when heated strongly, can turn into substances that are harmful to health.

Therefore, even if you are very fond of popcorn, it is still better to refrain from eating the finished product (or in extreme cases, reduce its consumption to a minimum) and make popcorn on your own. It is very easy to prepare it at home. You just need to buy special popcorn corn, preferably with the Natur mark on the package.
