Kashrut, or kosher, is the name of the rules of nutrition in Judaism. These rules apply not only to foods that can be eaten, but also to the cooking process.

Even if all kosher ingredients are used, food cannot be considered kosher if it comes in contact with any cooking utensils that were previously used for non-kosher food. However, such utensils can be cleaned to comply with the rules of Judaism.

  1. Clean the oven thoroughly if it has ever been used to cook non-kosher food. Rub the inside of the entire oven with a chemical oven cleaner using a steel wool. Remove all shelves and heating elements according to the instructions for your oven and wipe them clean, then reinstall all parts. You can also use the oven's self-cleaning function, if available.
  2. Clean the mixing bowl and bread pan, if necessary. Wash them normally the day before you bake your bread and let them dry. Soak each utensil in boiling water one minute before using it directly for making bread.
  3. Combine the ingredients for the kosher bread in a bowl according to the recipe. Knead the dough and let rise, if indicated in the recipe.
  4. Transfer the dough to a bread pan. If you are making flat bread, use a special flat bread pan. Again, the molds did not have to come into contact with non-kosher food.
  5. Bake the bread in a cleaned oven following the directions in the recipe.
