To prepare the classic recipe for herring under a fur coat, you will need the following products: fatty herring, if it is medium-sized, then you can either take a couple, or take a ready-made fillet; 3 or 4 potatoes, 2 medium-sized beets and carrots, 1 onion, mayonnaise.

The herring is cut into fillets: you need to remove the skin from it and remove the bones. You can, of course, buy a ready-made fillet, but it loses in taste to a whole fat fish. This option is only suitable if you are limited in time. Then cut the herring into small pieces.

Boil potatoes and carrots without fail in their uniforms, just before cooking they should be thoroughly washed with a brush. We also boil the beets.

Cooked vegetables are cut into small cubes. Perfectly even cubes will be obtained if you cut the food with an egg cutter. Well, a very simple way, but this does not make the taste of the dish worse, is just grate the vegetables on a coarse grater.

Finely chopped onions should be doused with boiling water, but again this is a matter of taste, someone omits this moment. After all, an onion and a herring are by no means antagonistic products.

Layers in the herring under a fur coat is an ambiguous question. You can even call it controversial, since some people prefer to start building the pyramid with potatoes, while according to others, the herring should go as the first layer, and then they put it in a fur coat. The ingredients for the salad remain the same: 2-4 beets, the same number of carrots and potatoes (the number of vegetables depends on their size); 1 herring, 1 onion, mayonnaise. You can add eggs to taste.

All vegetables are boiled in a peel, beets separately. Then they are cooled, cleaned, grated into different dishes.

The fish is deboned and cut into small pieces. Chop the onion quite finely, then mix with the herring. Boil the eggs, cool, clean, chop in an egg cutter or three.

We spread cling film on the working surface and spread a layer of beets on it. Give the shape of a rectangle. The next layer will be carrot, we make it narrower and thinner than the previous one. Lubricate with mayonnaise. Before that, salt if necessary.

Then, in the same way, distribute the potato over the carrot layer. It is also coated with mayonnaise. Lay an egg layer on top of the potatoes, also thinner and narrower. Herring with onions is laid out in a rectangular strip in the center.

We connect the ends of the rectangle with cling film, press the edges, the resulting salad "herring under a fur coat" roll into the refrigerator for several hours.

Cooking herring under a fur coat is not difficult, it just takes some time. Those who have gotten used to making this salad and cannot imagine a holiday without it can be advised to bring unusual notes to the dish by adding a layer of apples or a little sauerkraut.
