Beets are one of the main vitamin-containing vegetables. It is rich in substances that a person needs for the full functioning of the body. So that beets do not lose their beneficial qualities, it is important to know how to store them correctly.
Instructions
Step 1
To preserve beets for a long time, you need to properly prepare them. Harvest in cool weather, but only before frost. After digging, leave the roots outdoors to dry. Peel the soil off the beets, but never wash. Sort the root vegetables. Don't try to store damaged vegetables. Remove the tops by trimming them carefully, leaving about 1 centimeter of stems. It is important that it does not absorb moisture from the beets. After that, leave the roots in a well-ventilated area and let dry well.
Step 2
Now prepare a storage room for beets - a cellar or basement. The main thing is that it is dark with an optimal air temperature of +7 degrees. In addition, ensure the minimum air exchange in the room as much as possible. Do not store vegetables in the apartment, otherwise they will quickly deteriorate.
Step 3
Prepare the storage space for the beets. To do this, take sand that has been previously dried in the sun. Fill it at the bottom of a large box, carefully lay the root vegetables on top and sprinkle them with a small amount of the same sand. This storage method retains sufficient moisture and prevents the formation of mold and rot, which are the main causes of crop spoilage.
Step 4
In addition, the quality of vegetables depends not only on the method and conditions of storage, but also on how correctly you monitor the harvest. Be sure to check the beets at least 2 times a month, sort through them, sprinkle them with sand and cut off the newly appeared tops. If you suddenly notice rot, wipe the root crop with a dry cloth, sprinkle with chalk or process with liquid clay and let dry. If you follow all these recommendations, you have a chance to save the beets until the next harvest.
