It is necessary

  • - Milk;
  • - ruler.

Instructions

Step 1

It is possible to accurately determine the fat content of milk with special devices that are available only in dairy production. In factory laboratories, several methods are used for determining the fat content of milk: thermoelectric, high-frequency photoelectric, ultrasonic, and other methods. There is a way to measure the fat content of milk at home.

Step 2

Take a clear glass beaker and a ruler. Wash and dry the glass thoroughly. Put a dash on the glass at the level of 10 cm. The glass must be straight, otherwise there will be a distortion in the indicators. If the glass has a large, wide bottom, then you need to measure 10 cm from this bottom, and not from the table.

Step 3

Pour milk into the glass up to the mark. Measurements will be more accurate if the milk is fresh. Leave the glass of milk for 6-8 hours at room temperature.

Step 4

Gradually, in eight hours, the milk will be covered with a thicker layer - this is the cream. You need to measure the width of the cream layer to find out the fat content of the milk. To do this, take a ruler, bring it vertically to the glass and see how many millimeters the cream layer is.

Step 5

Then it remains to count. The milk layer height of 10 cm is taken as 100%. Each millimeter of cream will be one percent fat. For example, if the layer of cream is 4 mm, then the fat content of the milk is 4%. The fat content of milk can be from 1 to 6 percent.
