Unlike the juicy and incredibly healthy pulp of an avocado, or "alligator pear", the seeds of this South American fruit do not differ in special taste. First, eating them can cause allergies. Secondly, they taste like ordinary sawdust. However, you should not throw away the bones left from the avocado. You can use them, but not for food.
The most common way to use the avocado seed is to plant and grow your own "alligator pear". Having decided to bring the atmosphere of South American rainforests into your home, keep in mind that only seeds of a ripe fruit can germinate at home. You are unlikely to wait for seed shoots of an unripe avocado.
Carefully remove the pit from the juicy, captivatingly nutty avocado pulp, peel it well and wipe it dry. Place the seed in a pre-prepared small glass jar, such as baby food, filled with a mixture of earth, sand, and humus. The seed in the substrate should be located vertically, and its wide part should be at the bottom. You do not need to completely bury the avocado pit. A portion equal to approximately 2/3 of the total height of the seed should be exposed from the ground. If planting occurs in autumn or winter, the avocado tray should be filled with a moderate amount of liquid. If you decide to plant this fruit in summer or spring, watering should be quite abundant. The sprout of the future avocado appears, as a rule, a couple of months after planting.
In the conditions of the Russian climate, avocado grown from pits, as a rule, does not bear fruit. It carries only an aesthetic function and is often the real pride of its owner.
Noticing that the length of the plant roots has reached 3-4 cm, proceed to transplant the avocado into a larger container with a diameter of up to 10 cm. As with planting, you should not completely bury the seed. It is enough to sprinkle it with earth only by a third. Never remove any remaining hard skin from the seed. After a while, it will acquire a soft pink hue, smooth out and become a real decoration of the plant.
A tree that has grown up to 10-15 cm in height should be transplanted into an even more spacious pot. It must be grown in a bright, but not in direct sunlight, place. The plant is thermophilic, the critical air temperature for it is below 10-12 ° C. Once a month, fertilizing should be carried out in the form of any complex fertilizer. Avocado leaves should be often sprayed with water, and regular abundant watering is also necessary to prevent the earthen coma from drying out.
Avocado seeds are often used in children's art. One such seed is an excellent base for making crafts. For example, complementing it with details sculpted from plasticine, you can easily create the image of a bear, a hare or some fairy-tale character.
Especially savvy and talented avocado lovers use the pits of this fruit to make figurines of animals, birds and people. And some craftsmen even make original designer jewelry out of them: beads, brooches, hairpins.
Due to the similarity of the shape of avocado seeds to chicken eggs, they can also be used to make Easter souvenirs. It is enough to carefully remove the seed from the fruit, carefully clean it from the pulp, dry it, paint beautiful patterns on it with gouache or acrylic paints and cover it with a protective varnish. The whole process of making an Easter egg from an avocado seed can be entrusted to a child, only the last stage - varnishing, is best done by an adult.
