Walnuts are an essential ingredient in many desserts. And if you often cook cookies, pies and cakes with toppings or nut decorations, you should definitely have a supply of peeled kernels in your home. However, pre-shelled walnuts must be stored properly, otherwise they may lose their original flavor and valuable nutritional qualities.

Instructions

Step 1

Walnuts are rich in fats. This gives the kernels a delicate flavor and health benefits. However, it is precisely because of the high fat content that nuts quickly deteriorate, acquiring an unpleasant odor and bitterness. Therefore, you should not make large stocks of nuts, buying them for future use.

Step 2

You can store both shelled and peeled nuts. The latter are preferable - you can immediately discard damaged or spoiled copies. Choose only whole, intact kernels - chopped nuts and grains are for immediate consumption as they go bad very quickly. When storing nuts, make sure that they are not spoiled - the kernels should smell good, not have foreign stains and mold. Try them - the taste shouldn't be bitter or musty.

Step 3

Peeled nuts can be roasted. This is especially true if you purchased bulk kernels. Put them in a dry skillet and fry them for 10-15 minutes, stirring constantly. Cool the nuts before storing them.

Step 4

If you plan to eat walnuts within 10 days, store them in a sealed glass or plastic container in a cool, dark place. Do not leave them open in areas with high humidity - mold can form on the nuts.

Step 5

If you don't need the kernels anytime soon, package them differently. Place the nuts in a plastic container, close the lid tightly and place on the top shelf of the refrigerator. Make sure that no water or other liquid gets into the container - nuts can become moldy. In this form, kernels can be successfully stored for up to six months. Before use, taste them - if there are no foreign tastes and smells, the nuts are edible.

Step 6

Even longer - up to a year - peeled nuts are stored in the freezer. Wrap dry kernels in plastic wrap or foil and place in the freezer. To improve the taste, the nuts extracted from the refrigerator can be calcined in a heated oven for no more than 10 minutes - they will dry out and become tastier.
