The Bloody Mary cocktail first appeared in France in the 1920s. At the time, the French were dismissive of the drink. The cocktail was appreciated in America, where its creator Fernand Petiot soon moved.
In most cases, mixing the ingredients during the cocktail preparation process is intended to eliminate the characteristic off-flavor of the alcohol. The Bloody Mary cocktail, on the other hand, emphasizes with its taste the content of traditional Russian vodka.
Classic Bloody Mary Cocktail Recipe
100 ml of tomato juice is poured into a glass, which is sprinkled with finely ground salt and a mixture of red and black pepper on top. Spices should form a kind of clear boundary between the layers of tomato juice and vodka. If desired, add 3-4 drops of celery juice and 10-15 ml of lemon fresh to the liquid.
Next, 50 ml of vodka is poured into a glass. In this case, you need to try not to mix a strong drink with tomato juice. To do this, use a knife, which is leaned against the wall of the glass diagonally. Vodka is poured in a thin stream onto the blade of a knife. As the glass fills, the tip of the knife should be raised higher. As a result, vodka slowly flows down to the surface of the juice without mixing with it.
You can decorate the cocktail with olives. Often a sprig of dill or a piece of cheese serves as a decoration.
Features of making a drink
Despite the seeming simplicity of the recipe, the cocktail will be much tastier if several nuances are taken into account when performing it. So, it is better to sprinkle tomato juice with finely ground pepper first, and then use coarsely ground peppercorns. After adding vodka, large particles will float up, forming another "peppery" layer and adding spice to the first sip.
To keep the layers as clear as possible, it is best to use very cold vodka and warm tomato juice. The opposite recipe for the Bloody Mary cocktail is rarely used, when the glass is first filled with vodka and only after that the tomato juice is poured. On the blade of a knife, the juice flows down to the bottom of the glass in a viscous mass, gradually displacing the vodka into the top layer.
Such a cocktail cannot be prepared in a glass with a flat bottom. The ideal container for this drink is a glass. However, the boundary between the layers in the second case is not so clearly expressed.
It should be noted that the cocktail with separate layers is the most popular in Russia. In the USA, for example, they prefer to shake all the ingredients in a shaker. A cocktail with clear layers is called the "oriental version" in America.
Many Bloody Mary connoisseurs believe that using a shaker robs the drink of its inherent charm and benefits. There is a theory that the cocktail was invented specifically for people suffering from hangovers. A drink and a snack in one glass - what could be more convenient?
