Hawthorn is a widespread plant that is a tall bush or small tree. It grows in the temperate climatic zone of the Northern Hemisphere. Various types of hawthorn are most common in North America. In Russia, there is mainly blood-red hawthorn, which received this name because of the color of its berries, which in appearance resemble tiny apples.
Gardeners grow hawthorn as an ornamental plant. However, not everyone knows that it is also a valuable fruit crop, rich in biologically active substances, vitamins, pectins, microelements. Many tasty and very healthy things can be prepared from hawthorn berries.
Hawthorn gravy
Take some ripe hawthorn berries, grind them in a blender until smooth, mushy. Add half the amount (by weight) of liquid honey, mix everything thoroughly. Pour in some warm boiled water, depending on the consistency of gravy you want to get. Mix thoroughly again. Your gravy is ready. Its original taste will surely surprise and delight your household. The gravy is served with pancakes and pancakes. It also goes well with oatmeal or milk rice porridge.
Apple hawthorn jam
Thoroughly chop one kilogram of hawthorn fruits in a blender, add the same amount of peeled crushed apples (preferably sweet varieties), about one and a half kilograms of granulated sugar, pour in 1 liter of water, mix thoroughly and cook over low heat, stirring occasionally. Continue cooking until the desired consistency is obtained. Place it in sterilized glass jars, cover with lids scalded with boiling water.
