Choosing a ripe sweet watermelon is a science. Someone, when buying, is guided by the sound of the fruit, someone - by its size and shape, and someone does take the first specimen that comes across. In order not to be disappointed in its taste when buying a watermelon in the future, I advise you to choose the fruit at once according to several signs of its ripeness.
Watermelon size
Many people think that the larger the watermelon, the sweeter it is, but this is not the case. When choosing a watermelon, give preference to specimens of medium size (less likely that the fruit was artificially fed). The best option is a 7-10 kg watermelon. Naturally, before buying, inspect the rind of the watermelon: its unevenness and a yellowish spot on one side of the fruit indicates that it is ripe and, most likely, sweet. Look for fruit with a contrasting pattern, as these are the ones that have sugar flesh.
Watermelon boy and watermelon girl
Many do not know that watermelons differ by gender. For example, "boys" are larger in size, they have an elongated shape, while girls are small in size and flattened. When cut, the latter have small bones. By the way, "ladies" are sweeter.
Tail
When choosing a watermelon, be sure to pay attention to its "tail", try not to buy specimens without this, because it is by the "tail" that you can determine the ripeness of the fruit, for example, a yellow dry "tail" indicates that the watermelon is ripe, but green is a sign immaturity of berries.
To knock
You can also check the maturity of a watermelon by sound: ripe fruits, when tapped, emit a ringing sound. And yet, if a ripe watermelon is lightly squeezed, then it will emit a barely audible crack.
