On the shelves of retail outlets, you can increasingly find pomelo. This exotic fruit has been known since BC. China is its historical homeland, where emperors and the highest nobility could only be content with this wonderful taste. Soon, India also learned about the qualities of this wonderful fruit and has been growing these fruits for many years.

Where the pomelo grows, tall trees reach 15 meters in height. These evergreen trees can be found in Thailand, Japan, Sri Lanka and China. Already in the fourteenth century, the pomelo was brought to Europe, but they could not grow it here. The reason why the tree does not take root is not clear.

Nevertheless, some people use this plant as a decoration. Rare plants, with good care and sufficient lighting, can bear fruit.

Natural growing conditions for pomelo

Many people want to know how the pomelo grows. There is an opinion that the fruit appeared as a result of modifications. But in fact, in those days, people did not even know this word.

The pomelo grows on trees that can bear fruit up to four times a year. The favorite habitat is the tropics and subtropics. For trees, hot ground is important, reaching 30 degrees Celsius. The soil is made up of a mixture of sand, lime and clay. A prerequisite is the presence of sea water.

It is this kind of soil, and, accordingly, the natural growth conditions, are found on the coasts of Florida, Cuba, Sri Lanka, Thailand, the Bahamas and Japan. But they learned to grow pomelo even in Israel and the entire coast of South America. In order for the tree to drink salt water, trenches are dug from the sea to the gardens.

The fact that the pomelo fruit grows in natural conditions also depends on the fact that it is difficult to grow in colder places. This plant loves a lot of bright light and salt, thanks to which the fruits are so juicy and sweet.

Reproduction of pomelo

There are two ways to get a new tree and fruit. One way is with air vents. The second is to plant the seeds of the fruit in the ground. The peculiarity is that germination is maintained only while the seeds are inside the fruit. You cannot dry them - they die immediately. This means that immediately after the pomelo is eaten, the seeds must be placed in warm and moist soil. The germination of this plant is good and sometimes two sprouts from one seed may appear. Fruits can appear in 10-15 years.
