Strudli, a traditional German dish widely spread in other European countries. The dish has a huge plus: you can cook it from products that are almost always present in the refrigerator.
Products required for cooking
To prepare strudli, you will need the following ingredients: 500 g of meat, 2 onions, 1 medium carrot, 1 kg of potato tubers, salt and spices to taste, dill greens.
For the dough you need: 2 glasses of flour, 3 chicken eggs, salt to taste. You will need 3-4 tablespoons of vegetable oil to grease the dough.
You can cook strudli from any meat: beef, pork, lamb, chicken. Strudli can be prepared for future use and stored neat rolls in plastic bags in the freezer compartment of the refrigerator. It takes just over an hour to prepare strudles.
Strudley recipe
First of all, the dough is prepared. The flour is sieved and mixed with eggs, a pinch of salt. Water is added as much as the flour will take to make a sufficiently elastic dough, like for dumplings. The dough is wrapped in foil and sent to the refrigerator for half an hour. This time is quite enough for preparing vegetables.
The potatoes are peeled and cut into small cubes. Carrots are cut into rings, onions are chopped into thin half rings. The meat is cut into slices comparable in size to those of potatoes.
The dough is divided into 2 equal parts. Sprinkle the table with flour and roll each half into a circle with a diameter of 50-60 cm. Roll out the dough very thinly. Each layer is abundantly lubricated with vegetable oil and rolled up in a tight roll. The rolls are cut into pieces 2-3 cm long.
Layer 1/2 meat, 1/2 onion, 1/2 carrot, 1/2 potato, 1/2 strudel on the bottom of a deep-bottomed saucepan or saucepan. Then lay out the remaining ingredients in the same order. Sprinkle the dish on top with your favorite spices and salt. Ground black pepper can be used if desired.
The ingredients are poured with water so that it completely covers the last layer. The saucepan is placed on high heat. As soon as the water boils, the heat is reduced to low and the pan is tightly covered with a lid. The strudel will take about 30-40 minutes to cook. You can check the readiness of the dish by the softness of the vegetables. It is not necessary to use only the recommended set of vegetables in the recipe. Strudli is sometimes seasoned with chopped garlic, celery is added to the stew.
You should get a fairly thick dish. If you add more water to the pot, you can make an original soup. The finished dish is served hot, garnished with finely chopped fresh herbs.
