Sometimes, after the holiday, uneaten orange circles remain, from which you can make a wonderful dessert - caramelized oranges. According to some sources, the recipe came to us from Belgium, according to others - from Spain. In ancient times, honey was used to make sweets instead of sugar. Our contemporaries use oranges in caramel with tea or as decoration for cakes or pastries.
Wash and cut 5 medium-sized oranges into slices about half a centimeter thick. The tips are not used.
Water (0.5 liters) is poured into a saucepan, chopped fruits are added and boiled for 3-4 minutes to remove bitterness. After that, no water is used in the recipe.
Then the orange circles are laid out on a dry dish or towel and dried. It is not necessary to wait until they cool down.
A layer of sugar is poured into a saucepan or deep frying pan, on which a layer of oranges is folded. This is how the layers of fruit and sugar alternate. There must be sugar on top. For 5 oranges, take half a kilogram of sugar. Then all this is poured into a glass of water. During cooking, you can gradually add another glass of water.
Bring the mixture to a boil, reduce heat immediately and cover with a lid.
Cook the caramelized oranges within an hour and a half. Readiness is determined by the peel. If it has become soft, the fruits are ready.
Place the orange slices on a dish or paper towel and dry at room temperature.
The circles prepared in this way remain soft. To obtain hard caramelized oranges, the slices are laid out on a baking sheet with parchment paper and sent to the oven, where they are left for 15 minutes at a temperature of 120 degrees. To prevent the slices from burning, you can reduce the power of the fire to 90 degrees and below.
Orange circles taken out of the oven can be eaten as a ready-made dish, or used to make chocolate-covered oranges.
It is better to take dark chocolate, melt it in the microwave, adding a few drops of water. Dip orange slices into the melted mass and put them to dry on foil or cling film.
Caramel orange slices, both in chocolate and without it, will impress lovers of sweets.
