The first step is to decide where you will buy the melon. The right decision would be to go to a supermarket or a good market; the wrong decision would be to buy a melon in tents spontaneously appearing in summer by the road. The reasons for this are obvious: melons, like a sponge, perfectly absorb all the dirt and gasoline exhaust. It is unlikely that you will enjoy the dusty fruit, and there is nothing to say about the fact that it is very harmful.

In a store or in the market, do not hesitate to ask the seller for a certificate confirming the absence of nitrates in the melon. If the seller is confident in his product, he will let you familiarize yourself with it without any problems, and if he has something to hide (or the certificate is simply missing), it is better to go to another place for the melon. Also, look around: where are the melons? On the ground, right under the scorching sun? Then it is also better to refrain from buying: the fruits should lie in the shade, on the counter.

Choose whole melons and do not ask the seller to cut them in front of you to make sure the fruit is ripe. And this also applies to shops and bazaars. You can't vouch for the cleanliness of the hands and knife of the one who cut the melon into pieces, can you? In addition, melon contains a lot of sugars, which means that the cut site, especially in the heat, becomes an ideal breeding ground for bacteria.

There are a huge number of varieties of melons, but most often you are offered two: "Torpedo" and "Kolkhoz Woman". Moreover, the first option is much preferable: it is juicier, sweeter and more aromatic! If you choose "Kolkhoz Woman", do not take large fruits - they are less sweet. With the "Torpedo" the situation is the opposite.

By the way, about the latter: a rich, honey aroma with notes of honey, pear, pineapple will be a sign of a ripe fruit. But if it smells of greenery, put it aside: the melon is clearly not yet ripe.

Now let's move on to: the right fruit must, firstly, have a peel without damage, because it is she who protects it from the effects of the environment. Therefore, no cracks or breaks! Press on the skin - it should spring. Is there a dent from your finger? Melon despised and at home you will have to throw it in the trash. Also note that the "tail" of the melon should be dry, and the "nose" (the place of the flower) - soft. Moreover, fruits with large "tails" and "noses" (they are also called "girls") are sweeter!

The color of the melon should be free of dark spots (a sign of staleness). At the "torpedo" pay attention to the mesh - it should be dry and rough and have a light color. If it is green, the melon is not ripe.

Another way to check for ripeness is to scratch the skin of the fetus with your fingernail. With a ripe melon, you will immediately reach the green subcutaneous layer.

Slap the melon you like with your hand. If the sound is dull, then you can take it: you will most likely become the owner of a melon "in the juice itself."

At home, having cut a melon yourself, pay attention to the seeds: they should easily separate from. And the latter should have a whitish tint for the "collective farmer" and cream for the "torpedo".

Well, now is the time to taste the purchased fruit! I hope that using these tips, you are not mistaken with your choice! Most importantly, remember that:

  • do not gnaw the flesh right down to the skin;
  • do not eat melon on an empty stomach;
  • do not mix the melon with alcohol;
  • do not drink it with fermented milk products.
