In the summer heat, watermelon is an ideal way to enrich your body with liquid and replenish its supply of vitamins. After all, it contains folic acid, magnesium, potassium, selenium, vitamins of group B, C, pantothenic acid, carotenes and many other substances necessary for health. In addition, it is an excellent diuretic and cosmetic agent. And all this in one product! And in order for a watermelon to be not only useful, but also tasty, you need to choose the right one.
Remember the main places where you should not buy watermelons. For example, from trucks. Especially if the watermelons are laid out right on the ground for clarity. Avoid buying watermelons along roads, roadsides, or from trays. For your own safety, go shopping only in places specially designated for trade and in no case go to spontaneous markets.
Before buying a watermelon, do not forget to ask the seller about the quality of the products he sells. The trader must have a corresponding certificate for each batch. If all the documents are available from the seller, you can safely proceed to the choice.
Don't go after size: big doesn't mean ripe. It is best to focus on the weight of the berry. If the watermelon is large and relatively light, grab it without hesitation. Medium-sized fruit can also be very ripe and sweet. Especially if, with a light tapping, a ringing sound is heard on it.
An indicator of ripeness is the crackle when you press a watermelon. But do not overdo it, otherwise it may burst. Run your fingernail over the rind of the watermelon. If there are no "abrasions" left on it, the watermelon will be ripe.
Pay attention to the "tail" of the watermelon, it must be dry. The presence of a spot on the side with which the fruit lay on the melon is mandatory. Moreover, the more yellow it will be, the better.
The stripes on the rind can tell a lot about the ripeness of the watermelon. The smoother and more contrasting they are, the more ripe the berry is. If possible, “bathe” the watermelon in water: a ripe product will float up, an unripe product will plunge into the water.
It is believed that the tastiest of all watermelons - "girls". You can recognize them by the bottom of the berry. Convex with a small circle in the "boy" watermelon. Fruits with a flatter bottom and a wider circle, respectively, are female. Such watermelons are the sweetest, and there are much fewer seeds in them.
