Sterilization of cans is a mandatory procedure when preserving fruits. Without it, it is impossible to obtain blanks that would be stored for a long time. One of the easiest sterilization methods is to heat the cans in the oven at a specific temperature.
There are several ways to sterilize jars for blanks, for example, by processing with steam, boiling water, by heating them in a multicooker, double boiler, oven, microwave, etc. Using the oven for sterilization is a very convenient way to get rid of all kinds of bacteria in jars, however so that in the end the finished workpieces are stored for a long time, cans of different volumes must be kept in the device for a different amount of time or at different temperatures.
How to prepare jars for oven sterilization
The first step is to inspect the banks. If the container has any flaws that violate its integrity, especially cracks on the walls and bottom, chips on the neck, then this dish should be set aside - it is not suitable for canning. The fact is that when heated, either the cans will burst, or the blanks will quickly deteriorate, since a violation of the integrity of the cans is the key to the development of bacteria in their contents.
After selecting the dishes, they should be washed. It is better to use soda for work, as it perfectly cleans and does not leave any odors at the same time. In the absence of soda in the household, cans can be washed with ordinary dishwashing detergent or laundry soap. In conclusion, the jars must be thoroughly rinsed with cold water, laid out on a pre-washed oven rack with the neck down (the jars should not touch each other) and placed in a cold oven.
At what temperature and how long are jars sterilized in the oven
The holding time of cans in the oven depends on their size and the temperature at which the container is sterilized. It is believed that large cans (2-3 liters) are best sterilized at 100-120 degrees for a quarter of an hour, medium (700-800 grams and liter) - at 130-140 degrees for 10-12 minutes, and small, volume which is less than 700 ml - at 150 degrees for seven to five minutes. The timing should only be started after the oven has warmed up to the set temperature.
Important: you do not need to remove the heated jars from the oven immediately, but when they cool down to 70-80 degrees. The jars cool down to this temperature in 7-10 minutes after turning off the device. You can use them for their intended purpose immediately.
