Salted fat herring is the most popular snack on any table. If the herring is selected, salted and served correctly, it will bring a lot of pleasure, and not a trace will remain of it. However, not all salted herring goes straight to the table. Some housewives salt it for future use and store it in the refrigerator.

Instructions

Step 1

The easiest way is to put the salted herring in a glass jar and pour the brine in which it was salted. It doesn't matter if you already have chopped herring or you will keep it whole, the main thing is that the brine covers it all, without leaving the top pieces in the air. Without brine, they will dry out quickly and lose their taste.

Step 2

If there is not enough brine, prepare a special filling for the herring. After bringing the beer to a boil, add black peppercorns and bay leaves to it. Refrigerate. Pour the beer into a jar with herring, pour vegetable oil on top with a thin film and close the jar with parchment paper (by no means a nylon lid). This is a fairly old way of keeping herring fresh for more than one day.

Step 3

One of my grandmother's recipes: cut the peeled and gutted herring into pieces, put in a glass jar. Pour in vegetable oil or a special marinade filling of mayonnaise, herbs, onions, mustard and vinegar (choose a combination of ingredients at your discretion). However, salted fish can be stored in this form for no more than 3-4 days. And the taste of the herring, of course, will change significantly.

Step 4

There is an effective way of storing salted herring for a long time, which many housewives do not know about. Peel the fish, cut it, place it in a container and send it to the freezer. Surprisingly, after defrosting at room temperature, this herring can be immediately served on the table, lightly sprinkled with lemon juice and adding vegetable oil. None of the guests will distinguish thawed fish from fresh, and most importantly, it will not lose its taste at all (as when stored in a pot). It is recommended to store salted herring in the freezer only in a cleaned form and no more than 6 months.
