Iceberg lettuce is one of the most popular varieties in the United States of America. Outwardly, it resembles ordinary white cabbage, has the same juicy and crunchy, but much more tender leaves. Iceberg lettuce is ideal for preparing salads and appetizers.

Useful information about iceberg lettuce

  • Lettuce leaves contain the following trace elements: potassium, calcium, sodium, magnesium and phosphorus. The calorie content of 100 grams of the product is only about 15 kcal.
  • The salad is eaten fresh, stored in the refrigerator. After heat treatment, it loses its usefulness. To keep the Iceberg fresh longer, you need to thoroughly rinse the head of cabbage before storing it by cutting off the stump. Then fold in a colander and let dry. Then cover the salad with dry paper towels and place in a Zip Lock bag or in a plastic container with a tight-fitting lid.
  • Iceberg lettuce should not be placed next to apples, peaches and tomatoes, otherwise it will quickly deteriorate - therefore an airtight container for the product is a must. The average storage time in the refrigerator is up to two weeks.
  • When buying, pay attention to the density of the head of cabbage - if it is too loose, then you should not buy such a salad. The presence of sluggish and yellowed leaves should also be alarming. A good head of cabbage has a medium density and fresh juicy leaves.
  • When preparing dishes, the leaves from the head of cabbage should be separated by hand, it is also advisable to chop them manually. The fact is that when using a metal knife, the sections oxidize and acquire an unpleasant aftertaste.
  • Iceberg lettuce can be used not only as an ingredient in a recipe, but also for garnishing and serving dishes. Juicy crispy leaves go well with chicken, baked pork and shrimp.
  • Iceberg lettuce has another name - "Ice Mountain".
