Delicious, ripe, juicy watermelon, the crown of summer fruit and berry abundance! How great it would be to serve this sweet piece of hot summer on the table on New Year's Eve.
It is necessary
- - sand;
- - moss;
- - natural fabric or paper;
- - clay or tow;
- - straw.
Instructions
Step 1
In order for the watermelon to be stored as long as possible, certain conditions must be met. The fruits you have selected should not be damaged, cracked, stained, etc. (however, finding such a watermelon in the market or in a store is not easy, more precisely impossible). Overripe berries are unsuitable for storage. The variety also matters. Only late varieties are good in this regard. The storage room must be disinfected with slaked lime or vitriol. The temperature in it should be kept within the range from +3 to +8 degrees (in the warmth the watermelon will ferment or germinate), humidity - 80 - 85 percent (in a dry room it quickly becomes sluggish).
Step 2
There are different storage methods. The most famous is storage in the sand - as, for example, vegetables are stored. Pour dry sand into a wooden box. Bury a watermelon in it. Place the box in the cellar.
Step 3
You can store the watermelon hanging. Wrap it with a cloth or newspaper, put it in a net and hang it up. Thus, watermelons can be stored for up to 3 months.
Step 4
A good way is to store it on moss. The moss must be dry. It is harvested in summer in dry, sunny weather. Lay out the bottom of the wooden box with a thick layer of moss, put a watermelon on top. Place the box in the cellar.
Step 5
The next way is storage in wood ash. Pour the ashes into a wooden barrel or tub, put a watermelon there. Cover it with ash on top. Seal the barrel tightly and place in the cellar.
Step 6
Another storage method. Cover the watermelon with clay or wrap with tow. Store in a cool place, for example everything in the same cellar.
Step 7
Watermelons can be stored simply on the shelves. Cover them with straw and stack the selected watermelons. They should not touch each other. Inspect them periodically and turn them over. Wear gloves when handling. Maintain the room at an optimal temperature.
