What is Temaki Sushi

"Temaki" is translated from Japanese as hand-made rolls. This dish is loved both in Japan and in other countries for its simplicity and taste. Temaki is sushi ingredients (rolls) rolled into a cone and wrapped in nori (seaweed) leaf.

The components can be anything. The principle is similar to making pizza, that is, you can use the leftovers of whatever is left in the refrigerator. It all depends on how Japanese it should be. Temaki is not cut into pieces, but served whole and eaten by hand, which will not baffle guests who cannot eat with chopsticks. It is served immediately after preparation. This dish can be either main or independent, or one of the colorful snacks.

Cooking technology

To prepare temaki sushi, you will need a nori leaf, sushi rice, sesame seeds and foods that can be used as a filling (seafood, vegetables). The nori leaf should be well dried on one side and have an even, shiny dark green color for the resulting "horn" to be crispy. If this is not the case, the kelp is dried in the microwave.

To prepare one temaki sushi, take half of a nori leaf and lay a layer of rice on one half of it from the matte side, sprinkle with sesame seeds. Place food diagonally, such as a strip of salmon and cucumber.

The nori leaf is slightly moistened around the edges with water and vinegar and rolled up in a cone. The resulting "horn" should be quite dense. If, when pressed on it, it turns out to be loose or falls apart, its edges should be moistened again with a solution of water and vinegar and re-rolled. You can also use a few grains of rice to glue together by placing them on the edge of the nori. A serving of temaki sushi consists of two pieces.

If you want to make temaki more spicy, you can put tender shoots of daikon (white radish) or grated ordinary radish in the dish. In order for the taste to be more delicate, it is a good idea to add cream cheese and caviar to it, for contrast. In this case, the dish will already look festive.

If it is too difficult to get a leaf of seaweed specially prepared for sushi for temaki, you can replace it with a leaf of lettuce. True, it will no longer be quite Japanese, but the taste will be very mild.

Temaki sushi can be served in different ways, but traditionally a stand is used for table setting, in which the dish is placed vertically. A serving of pickled ginger and wasabi is spread on top of it.
