North American cuisine can rightfully be called multinational, because it has absorbed the culinary traditions of a dozen different cuisines from around the world. The cuisine of the United States is a mixture of very different immigrant cultures. German sausages and steaks are here side by side with Italian pizza and oriental tempura.
America is the birthplace of fast food. Nowadays, hamburgers, fries and hot dogs are very popular in many countries. Potato chips were invented here for the first time. It was made by a chef from Saratoga Springs, New York. It was in America that the tradition of making stuffed turkey and pumpkin pie with cinnamon for Thanksgiving was born.
Another culinary tradition in the United States is to have a backyard barbecue where hot or savory sauces are served with flavorful meats. They also love salads - from the simplest ones, for example, from fresh cabbage with carrots ("Cole-slow") or boiled potatoes with eggs and leeks, to very laborious ones. These include the famous "Cobb" multicomponent salad, which can also be served as a main dish. Another popular American salad - "Waldorf", was invented in 1893 for the opening of the hotel of the same name. The salad is usually served with cold baked ham.
Waldorf salad
- sweet and sour apples - 300 g
- celery stalks - 150 g
- sweet grapes - 150 g
- mayonnaise - 100 g
- walnuts - 30 g
- lemon juice - 4 tbsp. spoons
- green lettuce leaves for serving
- Wash the apples and cut into small pieces. Add some freshly squeezed lemon juice to keep the slices from darkening. Chop celery stalks and grapes, remove seeds if necessary. Coarsely chop the nuts.
- Mix mayonnaise with 3 tablespoons of lemon juice. Put lettuce leaves on a plate. Put a mixture of apples, grapes, nuts and celery on the salad. Season with cooked sauce.
When preparing meat dishes, Americans often prefer beef, and turkey and chicken are especially popular among poultry. Hot and cold sandwiches are common snacks. They prefer rice as a side dish, including wild and brown rice. Condiments and spices are used in a wide variety of ways. Often, when cooking, they use onion and garlic powder, several types of pepper, ginger, cumin; for confectionery - cinnamon, vanilla, nutmeg, cloves.
Soul Cinnabon Buns
- flour - 2 cups
- milk - 100 ml
- butter - 100 g
- cream cheese - 75 g
- sugar - 2/3 cup
- icing sugar - 2/3 cup
- egg - 1 piece
- ground cinnamon - 2 tbsp. spoons
- dry fast-acting yeast - 6 g
- vanilla sugar - 1 sachet
- salt - 1/2 tsp
- Dissolve yeast in warmed milk. Remove the eggs from the refrigerator in advance, beat with a mixer until foamy. Add a third of the sugar, half of the vanilla, an egg and 1 1/2 tablespoons of softened butter to the milk. Add flour and salt mixture to liquid ingredients. Knead the non-sticky dough, cover with a towel and leave warm for an hour.
- Roll out the dough into a thin layer. Brush with melted butter (1 1/2 tablespoons). Stir 1/2 cup cinnamon sugar and sprinkle over the dough. Roll it into a tight roll. Cut into pieces 2-3 cm thick.
- Cover the baking dish with parchment paper, place the buns close to each other. Bake for 45 minutes in an oven preheated to 160 gadus Celsius. For the glaze, mix together the cheese, powder, vanilla and remaining butter. Drizzle over hot buns.
As for American desserts, one cannot fail to mention the chocolate brownies, cheesecake, donuts in colored glaze and cinnabona buns, which have gained popularity all over the world. And of course the famous peanut butter - it is customary to spread it on white bread or add to baked goods.
Chocolate brownie cakes
- icing sugar - 180 g
- butter - 125 g
- high-quality dark chocolate - 100 g
- cocoa powder - 50 g
- flour - 30 g
- eggs - 2 pieces
- baking powder - 1/2 tsp
- Stir all dry ingredients. In a saucepan, melt the chocolate and butter over low heat, stir until smooth. Add chopped nuts if desired. Add dry ingredients gradually and stir well. Beat the eggs, pour into the slightly cooled mixture, mix again.
- Place baking paper in a baking dish. Pour the chocolate dough over the top. Bake in an oven preheated to 180 degrees Celsius for 25 minutes. Brownies should be crusty on the outside and slightly damp on the inside. Cut the finished cakes into portions, serve with ice cream and fresh berries.
The drink that first comes to mind when we hear the phrase "American cuisine" is, of course, Coca-Cola. This trademark was first registered in the United States in 1893. America is also home to popular cocktails: Manhattan, Long Island Ice Tee, Sage Romance. Today, a variety of American cuisine has found its fans almost in every part of the world.
