Chocolate is a sweet treat that children and adults alike adore. But few consider it a useful product. However, research shows that dark chocolate has some health benefits.
Chocolate is high in polyphenols called flavonoids. These are natural substances found in plant products. Other foods rich in them are cranberries, apples, onions, spinach, asparagus, tea, red wine. They, like other polyphenols, are antioxidants, substances that prevent damage to cells in the body, as well as aids in their repair.
Scientists have found that the high amounts of flavonoids found in dark chocolate help reduce the risk of heart disease. Flavonoids protect the polyunsaturated fatty acids of cell membranes from oxidation by free radicals, and also prevent clogging of the arteries. Research has shown that chocolate's antioxidant properties help fight free radicals that lead to heart disease and other health problems. A diet supplemented with dark chocolate results in a slight reduction in bad LDL cholesterol and prevents clogged arteries.
Another study has shown that dark chocolate lowers blood pressure. People who regularly ate cocoa foods had lower blood pressure and were less likely to suffer from cardiovascular disease.
Keep in mind that chocolate should be consumed in moderation as it is a high-calorie food that is rich in saturated fat.
