Many housewives prepare potato dishes almost daily. And this is quite understandable - you can make pies, mashed potatoes and casseroles from potatoes, add them to a salad or omelet, and this vegetable is indispensable for a side dish. Is it possible to save your time by peeling potatoes for future use and saving them until the next meal is prepared?
It is necessary
- - a container with cold water;
- - plastic bag;
- - freezer.
Instructions
Step 1
Before peeling potatoes, rinse them thoroughly. Remove the peel with a knife or potato peeler, simultaneously removing the eyes and damaged areas. If you are processing young potatoes, remove as thin a layer of the skin as possible or do not peel the root vegetable at all. Old tubers need to be peeled less delicately, removing not only the peel, but also part of the potato under it. It is better to discard green potatoes, they can be hazardous to health.
Step 2
After peeling the potato, rinse it thoroughly and immediately place it in cold water. In the air, potatoes instantly darken and dry, while losing their taste.
Step 3
If you don't plan on cooking the tubers right away, you can leave them in the water for 3-4 hours. Don't chop the potatoes - it's best to do this just before cooking. In general, tubers will retain more valuable nutrients.
Step 4
Need to keep vegetables longer? Place a container of peeled potatoes filled with water in the refrigerator. Potatoes can be stored there for a day or more. Rinse the tubers removed from the water again before further cooking.
Step 5
If you plan on making mashed potatoes or soup, keeping the potatoes in water won't hurt. However, it can be difficult to cook whole - the tubers will crack and fall apart during the cooking process. To maintain their density, try another storage method. Tie the peeled potatoes tightly in a plastic bag and place in the fridge freezer. In this form, tubers can be stored for up to 24 hours. Do not defrost potatoes before cooking, but immediately place them in boiling salted water. If you need potatoes for soup, cut them into cubes beforehand.
Step 6
In a similar way, you can prepare potatoes for frying. Rinse peeled tubers thoroughly to remove starch and prevent browning. Cut the tubers into slices, wrap in cling film and place in the freezer. Heat oil or fat before frying and place frozen slices in the pan.
