Numerous references to this drink can be found in the works of Remarque and other great writers. But not everyone knows what Calvados is and why it has earned such popularity.
This French drink is not at all as popular in Russia as cognac, but good Calvados is in no way inferior to it in taste. Calvados is made in northern Normandy, where the climate is not suitable for grapes, but rich apple harvests are harvested.
The preparation of the drink takes place in several stages: first, wort is obtained from apples, then, as a result of fermentation, cider is obtained from the wort, after which Calvados is produced by distillation. The drink is aged in oak barrels, where it is "aged", as a result of which it acquires a dark amber color and delicate refined aroma. After aging, a blend follows, that is, mixing calvados of different ages to obtain a softer taste. The age of the youngest Calvados of the whole blend is indicated on the label.
Calvados is a name strictly controlled by origin, that is, it can only be produced in the French region of the same name. Also, apple varieties suitable for its preparation are regulated. Moreover, the ratio of sweet, sour and sweet-sour is kept secret by manufacturers, because it determines the characteristics of the taste and aroma of this drink. Also, the manufacturer is obliged to strictly adhere to the distillation technology and aging time in oak barrels.
Served with room temperature calvados. It is customary to drink it on a digestive, that is, after eating. The French also like to add it to coffee. Calvados is believed to help improve digestion, if consumed in moderation, of course.
