Cancers are very specific. Like any seafood, they are not stored for long. Of course, it is best to boil them immediately after purchase, but what if this may not be possible? Fortunately, there are several ways to keep crayfish alive for several days.
Instructions
Step 1
For the full functioning of all life support organs, the cancer must remain in the water, preferably in the one from which it was pulled. As a rule, cages are used to store crayfish. The cage material is not important. It can be wood, plastic, but most often metal meshes are used for these purposes. The cage must be placed in a container with river water and covered. If this is not possible, then you can put the cage in the bathroom with plain water. It needs to be changed every day, as crayfish need oxygen, which is obtained from water. It should be borne in mind that crayfish must be fed, otherwise they will begin to eat each other from hunger. They prefer fish for food, but such food can provoke fights, which in crayfish usually end in injuries in the form of a lost claw. It is better to give preference to plant foods: raw potatoes, pea pods, and various herbs. This storage method will extend the life of crayfish by no more than 3-5 days, but everything is individual.
Step 2
Crayfish can be stored outside the aquatic environment, but since it is difficult for them to breathe without water, the shelf life in air is only 1-2 days. Crayfish should be kept in a cool and humid place. The room must be ventilated as often as possible. Regular spraying with a spray bottle will help keep you alive. In the absolute absence of water, cancer suffers from pain due to the release of lactic acid.
Step 3
Some housewives keep live crayfish in the refrigerator. To do this, they are washed under running water and placed in a clean plastic bag on the bottom shelf of the refrigerator or in the compartment for storing fruits and vegetables. This is a zone of freshness, where the temperature is around 0 ° C. In such conditions, crayfish can live no more than 4 days.
Step 4
It is necessary to monitor the condition of the crayfish and, if a dead individual is found, it must be immediately removed from the total mass. First, crayfish are scavengers and will immediately begin to eat dead crayfish. And besides, a rather strong smell comes from the decomposing carcass. Secondly, it can accidentally get into the pan along with live crayfish, and then the whole batch will need to be thrown out, since toxins have already entered the water, causing severe poisoning. And the taste of the crayfish will be completely spoiled. Dead crayfish can be identified by the complete lack of movement and an absolutely straight neck, which in live crayfish is always slightly twisted.
