When things do not go well at the very beginning, use the expression "the first pancake is lumpy." Where did this expression come from and what did it mean at the beginning of its appearance? Now you can often hear it in the kitchen, when the hostess prepares pancakes, pancakes and, of course, pancakes.

There are three variants of the occurrence of the phrase "the first pancake is lumpy."

The first one is simple. The expression was used literally and meant exactly that the first pancake sticks to an insufficiently heated pan and is not baked to the end. The hostess collects the dough, which gathers into a lump and puts it on a plate.

At the same time, a pancake can function as a test one. Once you've tasted it, it's easy to determine which ingredients are worth adding. Also, the first unsuccessful attempt at baking tells the hostess that it is worth adding temperature or adding oil.

The second option says that pancakes are a treat for deceased relatives. It was the first pancake that was usually presented to the souls of the dead, but it was impossible to eat it.

Following this tradition, the Slavs put the first pancake on the windowsill. So they wanted to show their respect to their relatives, to show that they remember them. At the same time, they said: "Our parents, here is a pancake for your soul!"

The third hypothesis of what this phrase originally meant belongs to the modern folklorist Pankeev. According to his version, this expression is associated with the phrase "a lump in the throat", which means that when worried, it is difficult for a person to swallow.
