To keep the delicate taste and smell of tomatoes for as long as possible, follow these tips.
Not everyone knows that, due to low temperatures, tomatoes lose their aroma and acquire a loose structure.
Fleshy, thick-skinned tomatoes will last the longest.
You can store tomatoes in plastic boxes, but they should have lattice walls and a bottom for better ventilation. The boxes must be thoroughly rinsed and disinfected with a disinfectant. Then wrap each tomato in paper and put in one layer in a box, sprinkle with sawdust and cover with another sheet of paper on top. Do the same manipulations with the rest of the tomatoes. It is best to store boxes in a cool, well-ventilated area. Sort the tomatoes every 5-7 days. If you find spoiled fruit without hesitation, throw it away.
There is another way - try soaking the tomatoes in a vinegar-salt solution. To do this, take 1 part of vinegar and salt for 8 parts of water. Tomatoes can also be immersed in vegetable oil. In terms of level, the oil should rise 1-2 cm above the tomatoes.
You can try to save not even the fruits themselves, but the bushes. Choose the sturdiest plants with a lot of ovaries. Dig them up and place in a room where the temperature does not exceed 12 degrees. Spread them out under the ceiling. So the fruits can be preserved until the New Year.
