Grapes are a southern heat-loving plant. In order for it to endure the winter season well, you need to properly prepare and cover it. All rules for sheltering the vineyard should be followed regarding the climate of the region where it grows.
It is necessary
- - covering for protection (roofing felt, polyethylene film, plywood);
- - spruce branches;
- - reinforcement studs.
Instructions
Step 1
In the last month of autumn, pour abundant soil under the grapes.
Step 2
In the first night frost (-1, -2), do not cover the grapes, let it harden a little.
Step 3
Prune the vine, leaving 5 to 10 buds each. The length of the vine will then be about one meter.
Step 4
Cover the ground near the rhizome with a 10 cm layer of spruce branches.
Step 5
Lay the vine on this mat in the direction of growth so that it does not break.
Step 6
Use arcuate wire pins to press it against the soil.
Step 7
Cover the pressed vine with spruce branches, but not tightly, providing it with ventilation.
Step 8
Put a covering on the spruce branches to protect it from rain and sleet. Remember to leave air gaps on the sides.
Step 9
When the first snow falls, shovel it onto the covered grapes. The thickness of the snow cover before severe frosts should be at least 10 cm. Only a properly carried out shelter of grapes for the winter will ensure a good harvest.
Step 10
Open the grapes in the spring when night temperatures are above zero.
