The exact history of this dish is unknown. There are different opinions about its origin: someone believes that it belongs to the cuisine of Tunisia, someone assures that it is exclusively Israeli food. There are other Mediterranean countries claiming the authorship of this recipe.

Somewhere the name of the dish sounds like "shakshyka", somewhere - "chakchyka", but in any case, the principle of preparation always remains unchanged.

You will need

  • one medium-sized red bell pepper;
  • one small green and / or yellow bell pepper;
  • 2-3 ground tomatoes;
  • one medium onion;
  • 3-5 pcs. eggs;
  • fresh herbs of Mediterranean cuisine (thyme, rosemary, basil and others) or ready-made dry mix;
  • Chili sauce (spice and quantity at your discretion);
  • salt (to taste);
  • black and / or allspice pepper (to taste);
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil;
  • feta cheese

As a vegetable oil, you can use olive oil (it is more suitable for this cuisine) or unrefined sunflower oil.

Use only fresh (no more than 10 days) eggs for cooking without damaging the shell.

The amount of ingredients can be increased proportionally depending on the number of servings required and the size of the pan.

Preparation

Step 1. Wash the pepper, drain it, remove the stalk with seeds. Dip in boiling water for a few seconds and remove the skin. Cut into small pieces.

Step 2. Rinse the tomatoes, drain and cut into cubes.

Step 3. Peel and finely chop the onions.

Step 4. Wash fresh herbs well, remove flabby, dry and chop finely.

Step 5. Pour a small amount of vegetable oil into the pan, heat it up. Add vegetables, stir and fry covered over low heat until tender. At the very end, season with salt and pepper, add herbs and sauce. Stir, heat for one minute, remove from heat.

Step 6. Wash and dry eggs.

Step 7. Make holes in the vegetable mixture and carefully pour one egg into each hole so that the yolk remains intact.

Step 8. Place the pan on the stove and turn on low heat. Turn on the oven (upper heating elements).

Step 9. As the heating elements are warmed up, put the pan in the oven and bring the eggs to readiness.

Step 10. Serve with pieces of feta cheese and garnish with herbs such as green onions.

Useful Tips

The above recipe is considered basic, classic. However, nothing prevents you from experimenting and adding additional ingredients: meat or sausage products, cheese, and other vegetables.

Since not everyone loves the taste of Mediterranean herbs, you can use the usual dill, parsley, cilantro, celery (leaves) and others instead.
