The word "sandwich" includes a number of snacks consisting of a bread base and various fillings - meat, fish or vegetable. Depending on the method of serving, there are several groups of sandwiches, among which are open and closed sandwiches, canapes and tartins, tartlets and volovana.
Open sandwiches
The first group of sandwiches is represented by the most familiar option: a slice of bread on which the filling is laid out. This can be a circle of sausage, a slice of cheese, meat or fish, vegetables and herbs. Often the surface of the bread is additionally moistened with butter or sauces. An open sandwich is the easiest snack to make, although true craftsmen can turn it into a culinary masterpiece.
Closed sandwiches
Closed sandwiches, or sandwiches, are a traditional Western snack. This category includes well-known hamburgers, cheeseburgers and other assortment of cafes offering fast food. Typically, for this type of sandwiches, a bun is used, which is cut in half, greased with butter, mayonnaise, ketchup and other sauces and filled with all kinds of ingredients. The sandwich turns out to be voluminous, hearty and, in terms of calorie content, can easily replace a full meal. The advantage of a closed sandwich is that it is convenient to take it with you. Sandwiches look appropriate on a festive table, set according to the principle of a buffet table. The original solution is mini buns stuffed with pasta made from avocado or chickpeas, and pieces of salted salmon, as well as various greens.
Canapes and tartins
The French word "canapes" refers to tiny sandwiches no more than 0.5 cm thick. The basis of the snack is fresh or dried bread, on which pieces of fish, meat, seafood, cheese, fruits and vegetables are placed vertically. This whole structure is skewered so that the canapes can be eaten whole in one go. The skewer helps guests to take the food neatly and not get their hands dirty. Most often, canapes are served at buffets as an appetizer for cocktails.
Tartins are similar in size to canapés, but the filling in this case is laid out on the bread in a small slide. As a rule, these are various pates and mousses, decorated with shrimp, berries, lemon or orange zest, and a sprig of herbs. Tartines are also eaten whole without being bitten.
Tartlets and oxen
Tartlets are small baskets made from shortcrust pastry that are filled with a variety of pates, salads, fruits, cheeses, etc. This appetizer can be served cold or hot. In the latter case, the finished basket, sprinkled with sauce or sprinkled with cheese, is briefly sent to the oven. Volovans are similar to tartlets in the way they are served, but they look a little different. A bulky puff pastry basket is more like a tiny hollow cylinder in which the filling is laid out. Volovany should be served hot.
