Everyone will love this French classic cheese casserole recipe. Its value lies in the fact that almost all ingredients can be replaced. Only cheese remains unchanged here. But it can also be hard, soft or melted. The bread layer can be easily replaced with a layer of rice. Instead of tomato sauce, you can use tomato paste or white béchamel sauce.
It is necessary
- For the dish:
- - butter;
- - salt - 1/4 tsp;
- - eggs - 6 pcs;
- - milk - 3/4 cup;
- - cheese - 250 g;
- - slices of white bread, at least 3 cm thick - 8 pcs.
- For the sauce:
- - basil;
- - green onion;
- - garlic - 1 clove;
- - black pepper - 1/2 tsp;
- - salt - 1 tsp;
- - bulbs - 1 pc;
- - ripe tomatoes - 500 g.
Instructions
Step 1
Chop the onion finely for tomato sauce, pour boiling water over the tomatoes and, peeling off the skin, cut into large pieces.
Step 2
Fry the onions in vegetable oil until tender, but do not burn. Add tomatoes and simmer on low heat. The tomatoes should be thickened. It will take about 15 minutes to cook.
Step 3
Whisk the prepared sauce in a blender or rub through a sieve. Season with pepper and salt to taste. Add finely chopped garlic, basil and green onions if desired.
Step 4
Lubricate the bottom of the deep pan with butter. Pour milk into a bowl. Dip bread slices on both sides in milk and place on a baking dish. Cut the bread into the desired shape into the remaining places of the form and fill the space.
Step 5
Place the tomato sauce on the bread, leaving a few spoons for the top. Next, lay out a layer of half the cheese. Then again a layer of soaked bread and on top the second half of the cheese.
Step 6
Beat the eggs with a mixer along with the rest of the milk. Salt the mass a little. Pour the egg mixture into the mold.
Step 7
Spread the tomato sauce on top with just a few spots. Spread the chunks of butter on top of this casserole. This is necessary for the formation of a golden brown crust.
Step 8
Preheat oven to 180oC, place a baked casserole dish there. Bake until the top of the casserole is golden brown and fluffy. This will take about sixty minutes. It is imperative to serve the dish warm or hot.
