Some teas have a higher caffeine content than coffee, for example. Therefore, people with diseases of the cardiovascular system need to consume tea in limited quantities. However, there is no need to completely give up your favorite drink. To take care of your health, you just need to give preference to certain types of tea.
The caffeine in dry tea leaves is not completely extracted during brewing. Therefore, there will be less alkaloid in brewed tea than stated in the parameters. When choosing a drink with a low caffeine content, it is necessary, first of all, to consider the type of tea.
What determines the level of caffeine in tea
The rule of value for money applies to tea. An expensive drink will have more caffeine than a cheap one. Most of all, tea buds and whole leaves, which are found in elite varieties of tea, contain this substance.
If we compare the common varieties of green and black tea, then the first will contain about 60-85 mg of an alkaloid in one two-hundred-gram glass. In the same volume of black tea, caffeine will be less - 40-70 mg.
How rich in alkaloid tea will be depends on the place of growth of the raw material. Traditionally, there is more caffeine in the leaves growing on high-altitude plantations. The air in these areas is cold, so the tea grows slowly.
The caffeine content of teas will be influenced by the degree of leaf fermentation. The smaller it is, the more the invigorating component will be in the drink. The time of brewing tea and the temperature of the water also matter. This is why white and green tea, a caffeine-rich oolong variety, will actually be less intense than black tea. This is due to the fact that such varieties are brewed not with boiling water, but with warm water, plus they are not insisted for long.
Low alkaloid teas
One of the most non-caffeinated is white tea. This is a real "elixir of immortality", as it is also called. White tea is rich in antioxidants and has healing properties. In order for this type of tea to give less caffeine in the infusion, young leaves are poured over with steam for no more than a minute.
Relatively little caffeine is found in many types of green tea - "Gunpowder", "Genmaicha", as well as in black Keemun. Minimum caffeine include herbal teas. There is absolutely no caffeine in herbal infusions of rooibos, tea with mint and chamomile.
When buying tea, consider the brands that are champions in caffeine content. These are black "Assam", "Ceylon", "Darjeeling", green "Gekuro". Thin leaf tea, regardless of the variety, as well as the product in bags, will contain more caffeine than tea made from large leaves. In the manufacture of tea bags, finely ground raw materials are used, so it infuses quickly and turns out to be rich. But even in these varieties and types of tea, caffeine will be less harmful than in strong coffee. This is due to the caffeine alkaloid present in tea in combination with tannin. These two substances form theine, which is slowly absorbed into the bloodstream. Therefore, freshly brewed strong tea is quickly excreted from the human body.
