Tea plantations, grown for more than a century in the southern regions of the Krasnodar Territory, near Sochi, are considered the most northern, where this crop is produced in industrial volumes. Krasnodar tea has a rich history and a wonderful future, thanks to its unique taste properties.
History of Krasnodar tea
The first successful attempts to grow this thermophilic culture in the very north of the subtropics, in the Krasnodar Territory, were made in 1906. Since that time, on the plantations of I. A. Koshman, located not far from Sochi near the Black Sea coast, they began to produce their own tea, which immediately earned the recognition of tea connoisseurs and gourmets even in the capitals. But the subsequent events: the Revolution, the Civil War, and then the Great Patriotic War, forced the breeders to abandon their attempts to grow tea on the territory of Russia for a long time.
They resumed only after the Great Patriotic War, when more than 1,500 hectares of tea plantations appeared in the vicinity of Sochi. During the years of Soviet power, Krasnodar and Georgian tea were the most accessible for the majority of the population, but their quality left much to be desired. Therefore, it is not surprising that after the collapse of the USSR and the appearance on the shelves of stores of various, including elite, varieties of tea from all over the world, Krasnodar was quickly forgotten.
The long ripening period of the tea leaves in the northern subtropics makes this tea especially aromatic. Abroad, it is used as additives that enhance the taste of Indian and Chinese tea.
But tea enthusiasts continued their painstaking work to improve the competitiveness and taste of this world's northernmost tea, and their efforts were not in vain. Already in 2003 and 2004, this tea made a splash at the World Tea Festival. Krasnodar teas were awarded gold awards in the nominations: "Disposable black velvet tea in bags", "Disposable black long tea in bags with additives" and "Elite green tea". Today, tea-packing enterprises of the Krasnodar Territory produce: black, green, red, yellow and white tea, as well as numerous tea and herbal preparations: with oregano, lavender, thyme, ginger, etc.
In the suburb of Sochi, the village of Loo, there is a sign "Tea houses", where a tea complex is located 1 km from the federal highway, here you can not only taste Krasnodar tea with honey and jam, but also buy it.
